HAVE THE GEESE GONE CRAZY?
Cherry Creek Arts Festival Announces New Art of the Community Project

DENVER, CO, June 2007 – This year’s Cherry Creek Arts Festival (CCAF), July 6-8, welcomes sculptural installation artist and photographer Karen White to the Art of the Community area of the 17th annual event. Karen will be creating a large-scale natural sculpture in the style of a large bird’s nest.

Casual on-lookers at the weekend event and those who want to get involved can take part in the creation of the work through hands-on interaction. The installation artwork in this series is called Sticks & Stones, and revolves around Karen’s method of emulating nature by spontaneously manipulating materials such as sticks and other natural resources.  Karen uses this process to build what looks like an oversized bird’s nest and other times to create imaginary natural settings where size and placement becomes skewed.

Once the nest is completed, it will be placed temporarily at the Fillmore Plaza in Cherry Creek North and will ‘evolve’ and change over time – allowing viewers to observe their own place within the natural world. “By dissolving boundaries of the man-made and growing organic artwork in close proximity to artificial structures and workspaces, the installation becomes a conduit to reconnect humans with the natural world,” said the artist Karen White.

The goal of the Art of the Community is to attract community-based, art-focused organizations that enhance the CCAF mission and create value to the audience by providing interactive, visually stimulating, quality special exhibits. Also included in this year’s Art of the Community will be presentations by the Denver Botanic Gardens, ArtReach, the Colorado Ballet, and more.
